When I was a freshmen...
- I thought Earth Science would be the hardest class
- I was pretty sure I could do no work and still get As
- I thought that I could cut as often as I want
- I thought there might be school spirit
- I thought that my high school career would be defined by my love of Pink Floyd
- I thought that it would take forever

In sophmore year, I thought I learned...
- That 99% of the time, you don't get what you want
- People were inherently good\
- If life is like AP Bio, I'm set forever
- That I could coast through everything and still succeed
- That the one thing I should never do was open up emotionally
- That Pink Floyd doesn't stay with you forever
- That you should settle for what's easiest to obtain

In 2008, I thought senior year would entail...
- Cutting every single class
- Doing minimal to no work
- Sleeping until 10
- Blasting music in the parking lot and getting lunch at Wendys
- Fistfights in the commmons with pirates
- Slip and Slides and ridiculous pranks
- Wild parties that would make John Hughes blush
- Defending the honor of my karate dojo against the Cobra Kai

If I could talk to freshmen Pat, I would tell him...
- Get a haircut, you look ridiculous
- You're going to regret doing so average in school
- You get into college, so don't freak out
- If you start listening to Animal Collective now, you will get so much street cred your ears will bleed
- You need to start caring
- Take life seriously, but make jokes every other bullet
- Stay in band, you're not going to regret it, but you should for appearence's sake
- At least just cut your hair before junior prom, you look like Screech for christ's sake
- Stop worrying about life and existence and just have fun

Change is hard to accept once it's right in front of you. But if I miss this moment now, I never get it back. Yep.

Freshman- I knew about (1) SATs (2) AP classes (3) I had to wake earlier (4) people in general were annoying (5) the teachers were tougher and weren't as nice (6) I didn't really know much.

Sophomore- I learned (1) People aren't really that annoying (2) I don't have to be scared of girls (3) I can BS most of history class but not math (4) you feel better if you dont dress like a schlub (5) actually getting to know people is cool (6) get background checks on people before you go out with them (7) do whatever you can to get out of gym class.

The things I thought would be the best about senior year are (1) not having to worry as much about work (2) getting accepted to college (3) senioritis (4) not having to see certain people ever again after summer (5) most of my ex's were leaving next year (6) driving to school (7) open campus... yeah (8) I'd know what I was doing with the rest of my life.

If I could go back in time and tell my freshmen self some things, they would be (1) don't go out with Tara (2) don't go out with Nicole (3) its okay to go out with Stef, just don't mess it up (4) don't expect people to measure up to the moral standard that you have come to expect from going to church every Sunday (5) forget about MC Hammer, he's a minister and he’s not that good anyway (6) you know nothing about the Giants, so stop wearing that jersey (7) don't touch the metal part of that live wire in electronics class (8) don't fall asleep in the shower, you will regret it (9) think.

I am really excited for this summer, and to graduate and go to college; I have been looking forward to it for three years.

As a freshman, I thought...
-9th grade would be the toughest year
-I would go to the school sport games
- I was good at math
- College was just a fantasy
- I still feel like I'm in middle school (spend two years here prior to high school)
-I would never get older

Learned as sophomore...
- The beauty of a C-4 plant
- I didn't know how to study
- College is approaching...
- Band is life.
- Mr. Kelly is the man
- Biology and I don't have the fondest of relationships.
- I actually almost have to take SATs.

Dreaming of a Senior on a Junior afternoon...
- Going out to get food during lunch
- Having an easier year (haha wrong on that one)
- Being older than the rest of the kids
- Using being a senior as a valid excuse
- No more SATs
- Senior "priveleges"
- Better food, better food
- High school almost being over

Bittersweet sorrow is but a lost cause in the essence of regret...
-Think about college now!!!
- Study more now and forever
- Cherish now because there is so much more work later on...
- Community service?
- College? Yeah, it's real.
- Practice more trumpet fool!
- Private lessons? ^
- Maybe think of a job now?
- Don't worry so much.

All I am thinking about is getting this year over with. Graduating is cool. Doesn't feel like it's over. Summer is hot. College is new.

Write 06 things you thought you knew about high school when you were a freshman.
1)I thought I’d still be able to continue getting 4.0s, which only lasted a year
2)I thought I’d keep a lot of the same friends, and I did for most part
3)I thought the building would be somewhat different. It wasn’t.
4)I never thought I’d join sports, but I ended up doing track for four years.
5)I thought AP world was going to be much more intimidating than it actually was
6)I thought that teachers would be much more competent than middle school teachers…not necessarily.

Write 07 things you thought you learned about life by the time you were a sophomore.
1)I thought I had already acquired a decent amount of music. Little did I know…
2)I thought I could work at Ben & Jerry’s and not get terribly out of shape. Wrong.
3)I would definitely be going to college in a city.
4)I wasn’t THAT awkward…anymore
5)It’s totally possible to stay friends with everyone from west! (not)
6)I wanted Mr. Kelly to be my teacher
7)There would be an annual PAC trip every year for the rest of high school.

Write 08 things you thought would be the best part of being a senior in high school when you were a junior.
1)“The teachers totallllyyy don’t care about anything at all after first semester!” (Nope, not true)
2)Knowing what college I’d be attending
3)More freedom
4)Turning 18
5)“Going to the beach everyday after school!” (this has yet to happen)
6)Senior prom
7)Never having to worry about SATS ever again
8)Leaving Smithtown once it’s over

Write 09 things you would tell yourself if your senior self could go back in time to give advice to your freshman self.
1)Don’t even apply for that job at McDonalds, you’ll only be there for 2 months and hate every minute of it
2)Anything that upsets you regarding boys and friends will make you temporarily miserable, but is insignificant in the long run and will teach you about yourself and others.
3)Don’t eat that salad on February 13th, 2007. There’s nothing wrong with it, but you’re going to get the stomach virus and have a taste aversion to ranch until you graduate and beyond
4)Don’t take the physics SAT subject test, it’s a waste of time and you won’t even break 600. Take Math 1 instead
5)The college application process is one of the most stressful things you’ll ever go through, but also one of the most exciting. It’s also quite expensive so don’t waste money applying places you really have no interest in.
6)Stop going to youth group. Once is enough. Really, don’t waste your time.
7)You’re really bad at AP physics and AP economics. Eco is manageable but will prevent you from seeing Animal Collective because of the AP test that you won’t get credit for anyway. But Nadramia is cool.
8)AP Physics is the worst academic mistake of your life…
9)You basically know your real friends at this point, but you’ll meet a few more keepers in sophomore and senior year.

Write 25 words you would use to describe how you feel about graduating, summer, and going on to college.
Ready to move on, slightly sad to say goodbye, going to miss those I care about, going to forget anything that will hold me back

As a freshman:
- I thought high school was just extended monotony.
- I felt that it wasn't important, and a waste of time.
- I thought it was just going to get worse and worse.
- I expected to do well without trying.
- I thought I was at the highest level of thinking, and that my thought process from freshman year to senior year wouldn't change.
- I thought things would change.

By the time I was a Sophomore:
- My progression from freshman to sophomore year is mind boggling, I can't believe how immature I was compared to sophomore year.
- I thought volleyball was going to take me everywhere.
- I learned that a lot of school is a waste of time, but some teachers really make it worth while.
- I thought mononucleosis was going to be the rest of my life.
- I thought school was going to be easy for the rest of high school.
- I thought life was simple.
-I thought high school was life.

I thought that when I would be a senior I would:
- Be less stressed.
- Be overwhelmed with joy over all the schools I got accepted by. (incorrect)
- Manage my time wisely, and have loads of fun with my friends.
- Be assertive and determined; I thought I would get “stuff” done.
- Care more.
- Have respect.
- Go where I wanted.
- Be in Spain.

To my freshman self:
-Change.
-Don’t be stupid.
-High school matters.
-Sushi is delicious.
-Take everything seriously, and try at everything you do.
-Don’t waste anyone’s time.
-Leave as soon as possible.
-Never work at Barnes and Noble.
-Try to enjoy it.

June 25:
It’s surreal; the idea of graduating. I’m getting freaked out by putting “Final” or “It’s our last” in front of everything I say. I’m done.

-Everyone is going to grow up
-Everyone will stay friends
-Four years is a long time

‘07
-Math is going to be useless in the real world
-Procrastination is bad
-summer jobs can be amazing
-all that matters is your final grade
-junior year is going to suck (it didn’t)
-you don’t really have to take Cornell notes
-I have a lot to learn, still

‘08
-being the oldest
-knowing you were going to leave this town
-open campus (oh, wait ...no)
-being able to drive to school
-knowing your best friends
-senior sports seasons!
-minimal work at the end of the year
-no more SATs!

‘09
-the hard work was worth it
-don’t kill yourself over the little things, though
-sometimes, you have to think about yourself
-trust yourself
-spend more time with your sister
-let people know how you feel
-be grateful for what you have
-friends are everything
-enjoy every day

I can’t believe it’s all over. I have never felt so many different things – but above all, I am excited and ready for what’s next.

-I thought that I wouldn’t have to take gym all four years
-I thought everything was going to be drastically different than middle school
-I thought that everyone would be friends with each other
-I thought that waking up early was going to kill me
-I thought I was mature

When I was a sophomore

-I thought I knew everything I could about school
-I thought I knew how to act like an adult
-I thought I learned how to handle friends
-I thought I learned how to get by without doing any work
-I thought that I knew where I was going to go in life

When I was a junior

-I thought the best thing about senior year would be driving to get lunch

-I thought that I would cut every day
-I thought school didn’t matter anymore
-I thought I would have easy classes senior year
-I thought I would have every period free to practice

Now that I’m a senior

-I would tell my freshmen self to try harder to get better grades, there’s always time to relax later

-I would tell myself to look in a mirror before leaving for school in the morning
-I would tell myself not to try so hard because no one cares
-I would tell myself to be more outgoing
-I would tell myself to stop worrying about my friends
-I would tell myself to have fun with it all

Scared, excited, envious, nervous, free, emotional, panicked, ecstatic, relieved, stressed, sad, anxious, overwhelmed, overjoyed, greedy, jittery, lonely, hungry, vivacious, melancholy, unprepared, calm, changed, fun , finally.

The best way to get into college would be to take every single difficult class presented to me.
I would remain unchanged throughout high school.
Seniors were these impossible cool people, able to drive and buy lotto tickets.
High school would be an endless marathon of parties. It wasn’t, especially not when I was a freshman.
Being a freshman would be the worst year ever, but it wasn’t that bad.
There was only one way to fit in with people when in fact there are dozens.

07
I understood the hierarchy of life (based on my experience with being a freshman and then being an upperclassman).
I’d have my whole life planned out by the time I was a senior.
I’d be able to be completely independent once I turned 18.
People are inherently good.
Deserving something would automatically mean that you’d receive it.
The path to choosing a college would be easy.
Opinions were static and that mine would never change.

08
Driving to school would be awesome.
Being a senior would actually come with privileges.
I really looked forward to being the leader of all the clubs that I’ve belonged to since freshman year (that is awesome).
Being a senior would entail more freedom and a later curfew in my house, but it really hasn’t.
I was excited to take part in senior activities such as Banquet, and rightly so.
I was thinking about voting for senior superlatives in freshman year, for some reason extremely impatient to be able to vote for al the categories.
Being the oldest in the school comes with perks, and I wanted to experience that.
I was looking forward to witnessing a senior prank, but that didn’t really come to fruition.

09
Don’t stress so much about taking the hardest classes.
Expand on your friendships a little in tenth grade.
Cut your hair earlier than you did. It was long for too long.
Join Quiz Bowl in freshman year. You’ll love it and regret not joining it until 10th grade.
Be nicer to your friends in sophomore year. They’re good people and don’t take them for granted
Fight with the orthodontist to get your braces off earlier. (They were on my teeth for years beyond the date that they should have been taken off, and really I probably could have gotten them off over a year before they were taken off. I’m very bitter about this.)
Use your locker more frequently. It will save you backaches.
Take care of your health. The first step to becoming healthy and fit is the hardest.

Liberated, nervous, excited, nostalgic, impatient, expectant, well-deserved, old, pumped, sad, mature, independent, childlike, conflicted, anxious, ready, knowing, fresh, blooming, free, happy, content, ecstatic, reluctant, pleased.
